What EMDR Therapy Is Really Like
One of the most common questions I hear is:
"What exactly is EMDR therapy?"
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based therapy approach that helps the brain process and heal from distressing experiences that may continue to affect us long after they occur.
Many people assume EMDR means reliving traumatic memories or talking in detail about painful experiences. In reality, the process is often much gentler than people expect.
EMDR works from the understanding that difficult experiences can become "stuck" in the brain and nervous system. Even when we logically know we are safe, our bodies may continue responding as if the threat is still present.
This can contribute to symptoms such as anxiety, panic, emotional reactivity, negative self-beliefs, chronic stress, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve us.
Before beginning any processing work, significant time is spent building safety, trust, coping skills, and emotional regulation strategies. The goal is not to move too quickly but to ensure you feel supported throughout the process.
During EMDR sessions, bilateral stimulation is used while you focus on specific memories, emotions, or beliefs. This helps the brain process information in a new way and often reduces the emotional intensity connected to difficult experiences.
Clients frequently report feeling lighter, less reactive, and more able to respond to situations from the present rather than from old wounds.
EMDR can be helpful for trauma, anxiety, relationship wounds, difficult life experiences, chronic stress, and negative beliefs about yourself.
At The Haven Therapy Studio, I integrate EMDR within a trauma-informed, nervous system-focused approach that prioritizes safety, connection, and lasting healing.
The goal is not simply symptom reduction. It is helping you feel more free, grounded, and connected to the life you want to live.
